Time to hit the reset button.
I'm healed and rested, both mentally and physically after June's racing. And I'm heavy and slow too, but that's nothing that I can't cure with four weeks of saddle time. Looks like masters districts will be a big training weekend for me this year rather than a time to shine, but that's fine. I'm happy to work for my teammates.
A few random observations from the family vacation to Washington DC:
1. America really is fat. I'm sporting four of five pounds of unnecessary weight right now after ten days' steady diet of beer and fried schtuff, but that's nothing compared to most of my fellow tourists. For a few days we stayed in a hotel with a pretty good breakfast buffet that was included in the price of the room. The heaping plates of junk that my fellow guests would put away was humbling and amazing and pretty gross all at once. I stared a little bit, like the elitist snob I apparently am. But really, it was kinda sad to see all of these guys my age with these huge guts.
2. There's a level of endurance that I don't have. One day we went to Busch Gardens, a big amusement park. The kids could only take so much appreciation of history. The kids loved it but I found it to be not so fun. I must be getting old cuz the rides make me sick after a while. And the massive crowds and standing in line... well I am in the untrained category there. At once point in one of those back and forth line maze things it occurred to me that I can probably ride a bike 10x farther and 10x faster than most of my fellow line-waiters, but that they were kickin' my arse at standing in line. They were all having fun, waiting patiently with great expectation for the next ride. And I was wondering when it would end.

Same goes for shopping (as standing in line). I can knock out a 75 miler on the bike and feel fresh as a daisy after a Spring rain. Five minutes of shopping with the wife, however, and I'm looking for the nearest bench.
